Nasha Mukti Kendra: When Gaming Stops Being Recreation

Gaming can occupy many hours without being a disorder. The warning sign is what starts disappearing around it: sleep, classes, meals, work, friendships or the ability to stop when planned. A family searching for a nasha mukti kendra because of gaming may be unsure whether treatment is excessive. The useful question is not how many games are installed. It is whether gaming has become difficult to control and is causing clear impairment.

How is gaming disorder different from heavy gaming?

The World Health Organization classifies gaming disorder in ICD-11 when impaired control, increasing priority given to gaming and continued play despite negative consequences cause significant functional impairment. WHO also states that only a small proportion of people who game develop the disorder, so long gaming sessions alone do not establish a diagnosis.

Recent Indian studies show why assessment matters. A 2024 study of 150 college gamers in Gujarat found internet gaming disorder in 5.3% of participants, and students playing more than two hours a day had significantly higher disorder scores. A 2025 study of 538 adolescents in Assam found a much lower prevalence of 0.6%, despite gaming being common.

Those different numbers are useful. They show that prevalence changes with age, sample, screening method and setting. A 2024 NIMHANS-linked study of 179 Indian young adults also found that escape and competition motives, along with weaker family cohesion, were associated with problematic gaming scores. A label should never come from one online questionnaire. A clinician looks at control, duration, consequences, sleep, mood, school or work functioning and whether another condition better explains the behaviour.

What signs should families take seriously?

Loss of control is the strongest clue. A teenager may agree to stop at 11 p.m., continue until 3 a.m., miss school, then repeat the same pattern despite consequences. In a 2024 Indian dental-college study, 7.2% of 385 students met criteria for internet gaming disorder and 31.8% were identified as risky gamers; sleep-related problems differed significantly across groups.

Watch ordinary routines. Meals may be carried to the screen, bathing delayed, assignments submitted late and family events avoided because they interrupt play. Irritability when a device is removed can occur, but anger alone is not diagnostic. The more useful pattern is repeated inability to reduce gaming despite a clear cost.

WHO’s 2024 adolescent report, based on almost 280,000 young people across 44 countries and regions, found that 34% played digital games daily and 12% were at risk of problematic gaming. Those data are not Indian prevalence figures, but they show that frequent gaming and problematic gaming are separate categories. They also show why a family should ask what gaming is replacing, rather than treating every daily player as unwell.

What happens in rehab for gaming addiction in India?

A rehab for gaming addiction in India should start with an assessment of gaming hours, night-time use, device access, family conflict, school or work performance, mood, anxiety, attention problems and other online behaviours. Treatment should not begin by assuming the device itself is the illness.

A first plan often changes the environment before it tries to change motivation. Night-time devices may move outside the bedroom, paid in-game purchases may be blocked, meals return to a table, and school or work hours are protected. These are practical controls, not punishment. The aim is to restore functions that gaming has displaced.

Psychological treatment can address urges, avoidance, social anxiety, low mood, reward-seeking and rigid thinking about progress inside the game. Family sessions may be useful when every conversation has become an argument about screen time. The 2025 Assam study found parental monitoring was associated with lower gaming-disorder risk, though that finding cannot prove that monitoring alone prevents the disorder.

Does someone need residential treatment for gaming?

Residential treatment is not automatically required. It may be considered when gaming continues through most waking hours, ordinary routines have collapsed, aggression or self-harm risk is present, severe depression coexists, or repeated structured attempts at home have failed. Many people can be treated through outpatient mental-health care with family participation and device rules.

That trade-off matters. Removing every device for weeks can stop gaming temporarily, yet the person still has to return to a phone, college portal, messaging apps and ordinary internet access. Effective treatment therefore needs practice with controlled use, sleep restoration and relapse planning rather than indefinite digital isolation.

For families in India, cost varies widely by setting, clinical intensity and whether residential care is used. Ask what the assessment covers, who provides therapy, how education or work is handled, how parents are involved and what happens when normal device access returns.

What can be done today?

Record seven days of gaming times, sleep, missed responsibilities and attempts to stop, then take that pattern to a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist experienced in addictive behaviours. Avoid diagnosing from hours alone. If gaming is accompanied by suicidal thoughts, violence or severe mental-health symptoms, seek urgent care.
